Summary

Organic farming supporters are questioning the Industry Ministry, for classifying 13 herbal plants as hazardous. The director-general of the Industrial Works Department explained that the listing of herbal plants only focused on the pesticides aspect, which is aiming to protect farmers from fake and contaminated pesticides. However, the organic farming organization and Alternative Agriculture Network has argued that this is not the way to control the quality of pesticides as the Ministry has claimed. The Act would affect the farmers themselves and not the big company of pesticide producers; this is why the organic farmers are questioning whether a big company is behind this decision.

Personal Response
In my opinion, the declaration of this ‘listing’ is too sudden and unclear. The industry should have discussed with the group of people that would be affected by this Act, and take every opinion into consideration before decided to approve the announcement. The Ministry has to be clearer with their explanation on the cause and reason of their decision, otherwise the organic farmers have total right to question its act and even take the issue into the court. Moreover, other organizations or Departments involved should investigate this issue carefully, to make certain that the problems would be solved and that the benefit would fall on our farmers and not the big company runners.
