One government branch wants all holiday alcohol sales banned, but another is luring tourists to the country to drink a few Siam Sunrays - made with "hazardous substances".
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on Friday had a formal introduction of the new alcoholic drink, which it hopes will do for Thailand what the Manhattan did for New York - whatever that was.The TAT introduced a drink that it calls Siam Sunrays, and by fiat of the TAT, it is now the official signature cocktail of Thailand and "gives the Thai tourism and hospitality industries a much-needed boost."
The Siam Sunrays (TAT Photo)
It's made with vodka, syrup, lime juice and soda water and some Thai ingredients: coconut liqueur, chilli and ginger, a leaf of Kaffir lime and three slivers of lemon grass.Meanwhile, Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai is battling with his deputy minister Manit Nopamornbodi, who wants to ban all sales of all alcoholic beverages for the entire three-day Songkran (Thai New Year) holiday in mid-April."I don't want the anti-alcohol campaign to worsen the tourism industry," said Mr Witthaya last week, but Mr Manit insists that a 2008 beverage control law makes it mandatory to ban all sales of all alcohol during all major holidays. Their dispute continues. If that's not enough, bureaucrats of the industry minister have just declared that three key ingredients of the cocktail - chilli, giner and lemon grass - to be "hazardous substances" because they are used as pesticide ingredients by organic farmers. The TAT is deaf to all this. Siam Sunrays is a perfect drink for anyone, any time, and "is the distinctive taste of Thailand."Others might have thought that tom yang goong and Pad Thai were the distinctive tase of Thailand, but TAT sees tourists flocking to Siam Sunrays.Brand cocktails "can help raise awareness of the destination," TAT claimed in high-profile press release that also cited the Singapore Sling or the Cuban Mojito from Havana - "part of global cosmopolitan culture and recognised worldwide," it claimed."Successful signature drinks are one way to fast track holiday destinations on to the world tourism map," according to the un-credited writer of the TAT press release. And, "Visitors are always keen to have a taste of the local signature drink as part of their overall trip experience."According to the government agency, Siam Sunrays was created by Surasakdi Pantaisong. He won the 2008 national bartender contest, which by coincidence was sponsored by the TAT and the Thai Hotels Association, the two groups pushing the new alcoholic drink at the foreign public. The TAT did not mention the extra award and payment it gave to Mr Surasakdi for the drink and his permission to use it in national promotions.
Here is the full recipe for the Siam Sunrays, from the TAT website:
