You eat what you are
A guideline to nutrigenomics

When you eat an oil-rich, fatty diet, do you ever wonder if your cholesterol rises uncontrollably? Or how some people are able to eat three eggs a day and still not suffer from a rise in cholesterol. These variations can be explained by one component in your body called "genes". Genes help you to control all health aspects. It helps you live a normal life, in short genes are your life.
It seems that you have to accept what your mother and father gave you. In reality, however, you have a chance of improving the function of your genes with a practical diet.
Genes are responsible for all human biological reactions so the food you eat is one of its responsibility. That is the origin of the latest emerging field of personalised anti-aging medicine called "nutrigenomics", which is the study of interaction between genes and diet.
It's the latest cutting edge genomics study which will help to unlock the secret of food to good health and help us to determine what should we eat and what we should not.
There is a good example of nutrigenomics: An lady weighing 120kg underwent nutrition genetic testing. It turned out that her genes were susceptible to green vegetables and whole unprocessed grain. A special diet was devised for her which included broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts and rolled oatmeal. On that special diet, she managed to lose 10kg in the first trimester.
The genetic explanation for this is people have specific genes for some foods. It can work together (diet-gene interaction) in an encouraging way or an opposing way. If you have fat-reducing genes it will help you to get rid of your last mean of rice chicken or braised pork leg quite easily.
- A few tips to the diet/gene guidance on how to eat right:
- Avoid a fat rich diet, including red meat and baked items, including pastries. This will not overwork the fat-reducing genes.
- Avoid refined carbohydrates and eat plenty of dark green vegetables and colourful fruit (some 500g on a daily basis) because it will help to counteract inflammatory genes that make you susceptible to many kinds of fatal diseases.
- Boost your antioxidant status with supplements and a diet that is rich in antioxidants. Avoid tobacco because you might not have enough detoxification genes that will help you get rid of the toxic wastes, including aberrant cancer cells.
These three cardinal rules of a nutrigenomics diet approach open a new paradigm of food for health.
Instead of the famous phrase "you are what you eat" in the nutrigenomics era it should be "you eat what you are".
Knowing your genes is only to help you get a basic guideline for selecting the right foods, in the right dose and at the right time.
Summary
From the scenario “you are what you eat”, telling us that all of us have different kind of “genes”, some people’s genes may burn the cholesterol better than others which is really good luck for those guys, we called this genes “the flat-reducing genes”. It seems like we have to accept the genes from our parent, but we should try to take care of ourselves by learning better step to eat. The author has advised that it is our own responsibilities to select or be more careful what you eat such as avoid eating flat rich diet. The author also suggests us a few tips to the diet/gene guidance on how to eat right:
1. Avoid a fat rich diet, including red meat and baked items, including pastries. This will not overwork the fat-reducing genes.
2. Avoid refined carbohydrates and eat plenty of dark green vegetables and colorful fruit (some 500g on a daily basis).
3. Boost our antioxidant status with supplements and a diet that is rich in antioxidants. Avoid tobacco because we might not have enough detoxification genes that will help us get rid of the toxic wastes, including aberrant cancer cells.
The author suggested that we should know our genes are the best way to get basic guideline for choosing the right kind of food, in the right does and at the right time.
Personal
From the above lesson, it is really useful for us to be more careful what we eat because “we eat what we are”. So, we should try to avoid consuming useless food. Although we have the same kind of genes or different kind of genes, actually we should take care of our health, eating only the useful food. In my opinion, for those people who have a lot of “the flat-reducing genes”, it may be good luck for them because even eat so much foods that contains a lot of cholesterol, they are still look slim and healthy but we may not know what there are something left behind or not. So, from the scenario, are warning us to beware of what we eat and advise the better way of eating behavior.
